Diamond Rugs, the new collaboration made up of Deer Tick's John McCauley and Robbie Crowell, Ian Saint Pé (The Black Lips), Steve Berlin (Los Lobos), Hardy Morris (Dead Confederate) and Bryan Dufresne (Six Finger Satellite) has released a video from their first and only show to date. The video was filmed December 29th at The Earl in Atlanta, and shows the raucous crew blast though their first single "Gimme A Beer." The bands highly anticipated self titled debut will be released later this year on Partisan Records. Check out the live rendition above and grab the lead single below.

Battles Announce "Dross Glop 2"

Last month we posted the first two tracks off the Dross Glop project, a series of remixes Battles is releasing on 12'' over the course of the next couple months. Today, the band announced part two of the project with remixes by The Alchemist, Shabazz Palaces, and Kode9. The 12'' vinyl will be in stores February 21st but you can hear the a-side 'White Electric' reworked by one time Digable Planets' Ishmael Butler's latest project Shabazz Palaces below.

Soulful hustler Andre Williams released some awesome artwork for his upcoming album Hoods And Shades, his fourth full length on Bloodshot Records. Williams teamed up legendary producer Don Was as well as Funk Brothers guitarist Dennis Coffey for 37 min. of folk/psychedelic/R&B, in what he [Williams] has dubbed “the Andre Williams folk album.” The albums first single "Dirt" can be heard below, and keep and eye out for Hoods And Shades when it hits shelves February 28th.

Sleepy Sun Announce Chicago Show

Northern California psych-rock outfit Sleepy Sun have announced tour dates throughout the months of March and April. Following an appearance at this years SXSW, the drone rockers will hit markets in the Midwest and south, including a date at Subterranean on April 20th with White Hills. Sleepy Sun will be hitting the road behind their forthcoming album Spine Hits, due April 10th on The End Records. Andrew W.K.'s Show Moved to the Riv

Due to demand, Andrew W.K.'s show that was originally scheduled for March 25th at the Metro has been moved to the Riviera. Billed as the I Get Wet 10 Year Anniversary Tour, W.K. will be playing his iconic "I Get Wet" album in its entirety with his full band on the March 25th date. Tickets purchased for the Metro will be honored at the Riv, with additional tickets going on sale this Saturday (2/11) at 10am. Tickets for the Metro show sold out with the quickness, so make sure to get up bright and early Saturday. They won't be around for too long.

Additionally, Stereogum has premiered the video for the Royal Baths second single "Faster, Harder."

The album sees Papineau - who has lent her vocals to records by Air and M83- lay haunting vocals over Alderete's compositions balancing the joyful celebration of life and the dark essence of death quite nicely. Guest appearances from Volta's Cedric Bixler-Zavala on drums and Broken Bells' bassist Jonathan Hischke layer atmospheric landscapes throughout the 11-song set. Widespread Panic - Blackout Blues (Video)

Widespread Panic are currently on the tail end of their first ever acoustic tour. The tour will also be the bands last for the indefinite future. After 25 years of heavy touring the band is going to hang things up for a bit to recharge the battery of sorts, though many of the members will continue to play with various side projects. Panic recently recorded all 3 nights of the Atlanta stop on their current tour, and have released a video for "Blackout Blues" taken from the first set of night one. Keep your eye out for pianists, JoJo Herman's solo around the 4 min. mark.

Alabama Shakes Cover Led Zeppelin

Up and coming blues-rock outfit Alabama Shakes have released a cover of the Led Zeppelin classic "How Many More Times." Front woman Brittnany Howard's voice holds up quite nicely to the tour-de-force of Robert Plant's roar. Hear the cover below and keep and eye out for the band's debut Boys & Girls, when it's April 10th on the ATO label.

The band will be in Chicago March 9th for a SOLD OUT show at Lincoln Hall.

Last week we posted the latest 'Dry Bone Valley' video from metal gods, Mastodon. Earlier today the band announced that they will head out on a co-headlining tour with Swedish hard rockers Opeth. The two bands will trade off headlining duties, with Mastodon getting the nod here in Chicago, April 13th at the Riviera Theatre. It will be the second time in six months Mastodon has headlined the Uptown theater. Fans can get pre-sale tickets starting tomorrow (2/1) through the bands website.

Electronic duo Korallreven are gearing up for a big year in 2012. Made up of Marcus Joons and Daniel Tjader, Korallreven's electronic pop is dance floor ready with just the right amount of shoe gaze to keep the music grounded. The Swedish duo will be playing their first ever shows in the US with select dates in New York, San Fransisco, Los Angeles and Chicago with a show at Lincoln Hall March 6th. The duo is touring behind their 2011 release An Album By Korallreven which saw the band team up with Victoria Bergsman of The Concretes for the excellent 'As Young As Yesterday.' Continusly grabing me with every new track relesed the group has my full on attention. Even a recent Britney Spears remix by the duo had me forgetting I was listening to Britney Spears.

Korallreven has also released the ONANDONANDON mixtape which the band described as "acid synths, sharp rave breaks, and a little bit of Baby D's 1992 chart smash, Let Me Be Your Fantasy." Stream the mix and grab the 'As Young As Yesterday' single below.

Gun N' Roses Playing House of Blues

Ok, so it's not the Guns N' Roses, but it is whatever product Axl Rose has been touting around for the past 15 years or so. Axl's, current group of misfits will be playing a very intimate show at the House Of Blues as part of a run of club shows the band will play in February. As of right now the Chicago show is the only Midwest date. Presale tickets for the Chicago show will go on sale Wednesday February 1st, on the bands website. Even without Slash, Duff, Izzy, and Steven, the chance to see Axl pumping out the hits at a small club, may well be worth the price of admission.

Jack White will release his first solo album Blunderbuss, April 23rd via his own Third Man Records label. The albums first single 'Love Interruption' -can be heard now by Vault members and will be available to everyone on White's site soon -will be released on vinyl along with the B-Side 'Machine Gun Silhoutte' on February 7th. White, an artist who is continuously moving from project to project; from producing, making TV appearances, writing, promoting, and playing on albums from everyone from Tom Jones to Insane Clown Posse, he has finally settled down (joking) to record his first proper solo album.

Earlier this month we highlighted garage/blues duo Royal Baths and their love for delta and Chicago blues. Earlier today, Pitchfork premiered the single 'Faster, Harder' off the bands sophomore record Better Luck Next Life, out February 7th on Kanine Records. The single, like the band has a very dark, almost Door-ish take on the blues-rock.
The band has also announced that they will play a free show here in Chicago, February 20th at The Empty Bottle. If this band's live sound is anything like their studio effort, it should make for a pretty intense set.

One of our favorite albums from the past year was The War On Drugs' Slave Ambient. Today, the band released the video for the albums' track 'Brothers.' The video is the band's third off Slave Ambient and follows album highlights 'Baby Missiles' and 'Come To The City.' The video was appropriately filmed by brothers Ben and Alex Brewer.

Additionally, the band's aforementioned 'Come To The City' was released this week on a 7'' single via Secretly Canadian. You can stream the singles B-Side 'Don't Fear The Ghost' below.

Yukon Blonde Playing Beat Kitchen/Release Single

Last month we highlighted Vancouver rock outfit Yukon Blonde and their big plans for 2012. At the time of our last post the band had a yet untitled LP and a Chicago tour date with an unannounced venue. This week the band filled in the missing parts with the announcement that their forthcoming LP will be tilted Tiger Talk (see album artwork above). The band has also released the albums first single 'Stairway' which can be heard below. As previously reported, the band is currently on the road in Europe and will be stateside beginning in March when they hit SXSW down in Austin. Yukon Blonde will then hit major markets across the US including a just announced show here in Chicago at the Beat Kitchen March 27th.

Blues legend and Chess Records recording artist Etta James passed away today due to complications from leukemia. The singer was 73. James signed to Chess in 1960 and recorded some hear most iconic songs for the Chicago label, including "At Last" and "I'd Rather Go Blind." James, battled drug and personal problems in the 70's, only to resurrect her career a decade later with The Seven Year Itch. Personal troubles aside, James will always be remembered as one of the blues most successful recording artists and a defining voice of Chess Records.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers have just announced that they will be playing the Allstate Arena May 28th as part of their World Tour behind the 2011 release I'm With You. This show will see a return to the Chicgoland area for the band since last playing the Allstate in 2007, and Lollapalooza the year prior. This tour should also make for enticing shows for the band's hardcore fans, for it will be the first time for many of them to see the Peppers' new guitarist Josh Klinhoffer. Recently, the band had to reschedule a number of shows due to a foot injury to lead singer Anthony Kiedis, but apparently he is going expected to make a full recovery, and will be ready to stomp, spin, and dance across the Allstate's stage. Tickets for the show will go on sale Saturday January 28th.

The bluegrass world will have all eyes on Chicago starting this Saturday as some of the genres' leading acts and legends will play together for a special tribute to the iconic Bill Monroe. Bassnectar Playing Congress Theater

Heavyweight dubstep producer Bassnectar has announced he will return to Chicago for a show at the Congress Theater April 14th. Bassnectar is putting the finishing touches on his forthcoming Vava Voom! EP, and will hit the road for a two month tour across the US. Wilco - Civic Opera House 2011

Last month Wilco played five hometown gigs throughout the city, with each nights' show being held at a smaller venue. The multi night run began on a Monday with the band playing at the historic Civic Opera House in The Loop. For their homecoming, Tweedy and Co. blasted through many tracks off their latest release The Whole Truth, and invited a few guests towards the end of the set, inviting show opener Nick Lowe and hometown soul queen Mavis Staples on stage for a run through The Band's "The Weight." We loved the show so much, we ranked it #4 on our best concerts of 2011 list. We just got our hands on that nights performance and are now sharing it with you. Rodrigo y Gabriela Playing Chicago Theatre

Last month I posted the first single "Juan Loco" off Rodrigo y Gabriela's forthcoming Area 52 LP. The album sees the Spanish guitar duo being backed by a 13 piece Cuban Orchestra that goes simply by C.U.B.A. Rodrigo y Gabriella have now announced that they will hit the road promoting the album and will create the album's fuller sound by bringing the orchestra out on the road with them. This set of shows should be like no other RyG show before, for it is the first time they have toured with a backing band. The guitarists and orchestra will be in Chicago April 12th playing the Chicago Theatre, an ideal venue for this show.

The Black Belles Playing Empty Bottle

Third Man Records recording artists The Black Belles released a handful of tour dates, including a February 15th date here in Chicago at The Empty Bottle. The girls are touring behind their 2011 self-titled release on the Jack White imprint. With tickets only $8 combined with the fact that it is on the 15th, the show should make for a good vaccination for those sick with the Valentine's blues. The Doors - She Smells So Nice

Yesterday, The Doors released their first new, completely unreleased song in 40 years. The track "She Smells So Nice" is up now for streaming on the bands Facebook page. The song was discovered by the band's co-producer Bruce Botnick while he was reviewing the sessions tape of the band's 1971 classic L.A.Woman. The band is gearing up to release the album's 40th Anniversary Reissue January 24th, which will feature the newly discovered track.

Anytime a band's bio reads something along the lines of " the foundation for their writing found inspiration from their interest in the alternate and open tunings of delta blues, their shared fascination in the African rhythm of early Chicago blues.." I seem to take notice. That is exactly how Royal Bath's got started. The New York via San Francisco duo are gearing up for their sophomore effort Better Luck Next Life, which will be released February 7th on the Kanine label. In their young career the band has opened for a pretty impressive handful of groups from The Oh Sees, Ty Segall, Fresh & The Onlys, and Wild Flag. Pitchfork premiered the band's "Black Sheep" video, which you can see below, and make sure to grab the albums first single "Darling Divine."

After an 11-year breakup, post punk band At The Drive-In announced today on their newly launched website and Twitter account that they will be reuniting, and that "This Station Is Now Operational." The band spilt up in 2001, with members going on to form The Mars Volta and Sparta. There is no further information regarding album, tours, etc. but we will certainly keep you posted as soon as we get any word.

Canadian art rockers The Darcys will be releasing their full length cover of AJA, the 1977 classic album by Steely Dan. Today, the band premiered "Josie" the albums closing track, over at Rolling Stone. AJA will be released as a free download on January 24th. Recorded while the band was struggling to finish their self titled sophomore effort, the Steely Dan project was conceived to challenge the band during a time of uncertainty. The Darcys will be touring behind AJA and their 2011 self titled release in 2012, a tour that will see the band stop by Subterranean for a show with Bombay Bicycle Club February 27th. Buried in the influences of Phil Spector's 60's girl groups, and the slick surf rock of Link Wray, The Parlour Suite is conjuring up the classic sound of old through the husband/wife duo of Inga and Joel Roberts. Inspired from their time as young lovers in Perth, Australia, the Minneapolis based bands' forthcoming EP Welcome To The Garden Party, was heavily influenced from their time surfing on the beach and roller skating through crowded boardwalk's on the Western coast of the Continent. The band will be in town this coming Sunday (1/15) for a show at The Beat Kitchen, where they will apply support duties for Chicago singer-songwriter Nina Ferraro. Mr. Gnome Playing Schubas

Last week Cleveland duo, Mr. Gnome announced they will be returning to Chicago in April for a show at Schubas. Singer/guitarist Nicole Barille and drummer/pianist Sam Meister will be touring behind the sonic psychedelia from their 2011 release Madness In Miniature, released on the El Marko label. The band was last in Chicago during their fall tour in November, and will return April 13th for a show at the aforementioned Lincoln Park club. The band had us hooked at first site with their Madness album cover and reeled us in with their chaotic approach to avant rock. The band's 2011 release stands as the one of the most underrated albums of the past year.

Brendan Benson Starting His Own Label/Releasing New Album

Singer songwriter and Jack White collaborator (The Raconteurs), Brendan Benson has announced that he will release his fifth studio album What Kind Of World on his own Readymade record label. The LP will be the second of two albums released in April on the newly launched label. Based out of Nashville, Readymade has been in the works since the 90's when Benson released Welfed Boy demos on the imprint. The labels first official release will be the debut album, Give Me My Change, from Nashville songwriter Young Hines due April 10th. Benson, will be in Austin for this year's SXSW promoting the album/label.

Side note, for those who are members of Jack White's Third Man Records Vault, you should be receiving your live LP from The Raconteurs any day now.

Best of 2011 - The Black Keys: El Camino

2008's Attack & Release saw The Black Keys working with producer Danger Mouse (Brian Burton) for the first time. The album, full of slow burning blues jams enhanced by Burton's distinct production touch now seems like it was a feeling out process for the two parties. Again in 2010 the blues duo called on the producer for the single "Tighten Up" off their Brothers LP. This time around Burton chose to open up the band's sound, incorporating a little R&B and soul, making the 2010 hit feel as if it was a lost recording from the Stax era.

Now in 2011, with El Camino, you really get a sense that their previous works were just a prologue to this album. Right from the start it's game on with the opening notes of "Lonely Boy." The dance floor ready track may be the best thing the band has ever done, with an accompanying video that is just as awesome, "Lonely Boy" is building a strong case for single of the year. As to keep the momentum from the albums opener, Burton steps in and lays a rolling bass line on "Dead and Gone" which transitions nicely into the sing along "Gold On The Ceiling." The highlight of the album comes with the soulful "Little Black Submarines." Dan Auerbach sings over single guitar before partner in crime Pat Carney joins in for a full assault rocker. Released only a couple of weeks ago, the album has barely had time to fully marinate, but trust, it's that good to be showing up on any "Best of Lists" for 2011.

Best of 2011 - Fleet Foxes: Helplessness Blues

Perhaps the only legitimate criticism of Fleet Foxes’ sophomore record, Helplessness Blues, is that it isn’t their self-titled debut album. Lead singer/song writer Robin Pecknold composes another set of gorgeous songs full of harmonies and soaring melodies. Although it’s darker than the first, it is also more complex and in that way is just as satisfying. The songs are bigger, as the band gives itself more room to innovate within the song structures, which allows for a wider sphere of sound that is both familiar and just beyond reach. The lyrics wrestle with problems of growing up and figuring out who he [Pecknold] supposed to be and what his place in this world really is. The questions don’t really get answered, but that’s always how it goes. The final answer to these concepts is never quite in site. What’s important is the journey, and the journey Fleet Foxes takes us on is rewarding, triumphant and beautiful. -J. Thornton

The record takes the listener down a path that includes bombastic energy, psychedelic slow jams, horn sections, a choir, and a spacey sound that only vocalist Jim James can deliver. And although it moves from sound to sound, even within the same songs, each track keeps you interested and engaged. Upon hearing W H O K I L L for the first time, you may begin to conjure up a lot of questions about what exactly you are listening too. Lets start with the Merrill Garbus, the brains behind tUnE-yArDs. Throughout W H O K I L L, Garbus builds multi-layered textures of sound using loops of percussion, vocals and the four stringed ukulele. Dabbling in just about all genres of music from free form jazz and afro-beat, to punk and acoustic rock, Garbus has recorded an album that defies to be labeled as anything else other than awesome. The schizophrenic single "Bizness" builds a wall of afro-punk with an unforgettable hook that got booty's moving on beaches to BBQ's all summer long. Garbus takes time out of the loud and frenetic, to lay some sultry vocals on the R&B tinged "Doorstep" and the lullaby "Wooly Wolly Gong," just to pick things up again on the set closing "Killa." With a running time of just under 50 min. W H O K I L L hits you in a blitzkrieg fashion, but it's a hurt that feels so good you'll be coming back for more, with every repetitive listen unveiling something new in Garbus' sound.

Pretty Good Dance Moves Announce Chicago Date

The production duo of Aaron Allietta and Jimmy Giannopoulos, aka Pretty Good Dance Moves, has announced that they will be touring in 2012 behind their forthcoming album Limo. The 8-movement Limo, sees the Chicago/Brooklyn duo taking a different approach to their studio output, creating one conscience piece instead of an album full on singles. The synth heavy Limo, transitions cleanly from one movement to the next while guest vocalist, and leading lady of the Brazilian Girls, Sabina Sciubba filters in and out with her sultry vocals. Allietta and Giannopoulos will be in Chicago February 25th for a show at The Empty Bottle.

Upon the opening notes of "Art of Almost" off Wilco's 2011 release The Whole Love, you get the feeling this is going to be a different record for the local boys. The psyched out guitar of Nels Cline on the opening track is the years' coolest six string moment and my be his finest work since joining the band in 2004. While not entirely filled with Cline's freak outs, The Whole Love is Cline's statement album. Even on the albums more melancholy moments "Sunloathe" and "Black Moon", Cline builds perfectly accompanying atmospheres to Jeff Tweedy's compositions. Released on the their own dBpm label, The Whole Love, is Wilco taking full advantage of their new emancipation. With a new found freedom, call 2011 a rebirth for a band that continues to evolve with every new album.

Best of 2011 - Cut Copy: Zonoscope

2011 was a huge year for dance music. Electronic DJ's, Producers, and dance-rock bands played to record setting crowds around the world filling clubs on a nightly basis as well as headline major music festivals from coast to coast. The scene also took a major hit in 2011 when electronic disco group LCD Soundsystem announced February 5th, that they would be calling it quits. Sure there was a surplus of DIY producers who could step up and temporarily patch the hole, keeping dance floors shaking. But what about the studio efforts LCD put out? Who could possibly step up and put out a quality record of music we could dance to in our homes and during our early morning commutes?

Coincidentally, and thankfully, we didn't have to wait too long. In fact only 24hrs. prior to LCD's announcement, Australian quartet Cut Copy released their highly anticipated third album Zonoscope. The band filled the album with 80's style production, complete with African rhythms (i.e. Talking Heads) and incorporated a vocal ensemble throughout, to help fill out the songs, think David Bowie's 'Fame.' Zonoscope gets the party started with the three singles, "Need You Now" "Take Me Over" and "Where I'm Going" kicking things off, and doesn't take a break until the final notes of the 15 min. closer "Sun God" creating the best dance record of the year. At their core, Cut Copy have always had pop underlinings throughout their electronic infused rave-ups, Zonoscope is the album where Cut Copy finally allows the pop to shine, and man is it bright!

Best of 2011 - Paul Simon: So Beautiful or So What

On So Beautiful or So What, Paul Simon has made his best album since 1986's iconic Graceland. Returning with the African rhythms on "Dazzling Blue," Simon conjures up the feel of his aforementioned masterpiece. In true Simon fashion, he continues to question his mortality through tight word ship, but always with that sly delivery, as to not take everything so seriously. Standout tracks "Rewrite" and "The Afterlife" hold up quite nicely to the best of Simon's past offerings. When he sings about picking up a girl in heaven, it's just classic 'Rhymin' Simon.'

Foster The People Playing Congress Theater

It took nearly 4 years for Adam Granduciel, the mastermind behind Philadelphia's The War On Drugs, to make the best guitar driven record of the 2011. At it's best, Slave Ambient takes 80's era Springsteen and U2 into modern rock territory. If the songs on Slave Ambient ever got played on the radio, you'd blast them through your cars 8'' speakers while stopped in rush hour traffic. The albums two singles "Baby Missiles" and "Come To The City" may be the best songs you didn't hear this year. On their sophomore release, Granduciel and his crack band weave monumental rock anthems between somber interludes creating one hell of a roller coaster of an album. At 47 minutes, it's a ride you'll hurry to get back on.

Back in January of 2010 we did one of our first posts on Chicago's first lady of soul Mavis Staples. We posted this video of Mavis and The Staple Singers providing vocal support to The Band during their iconic concert film The Last Waltz. Last night during their sold out show at the Civic Opera House, Wilco invited Mavis out for a set closing take on The Band classic "The Weight." When Lykke Li left her native Stockholm for Los Angeles to record her sophomore album Wounded Rhymes, she went looking for place that could help her lighten up the darkness of the 19 year who put out Youth Novels (Li's 2008 Debut) . If the Swedish singers 2011 release is her being light on subject matter, than we'd love to hear what her album may have sounded like if it were recorded in say Seattle, or anywhere gloomy. On Rhymes, Li's dark thoughts and feelings come out most beautifully like a tribal electronic love letter. The album starts off with Li singing as a naive lover on "I Follow Rivers" and "Love Out Lust." As the album continues Li builds confidence in her relationship with girl group-ish "Get Some" proclaiming "I'm your prostitute, you goin' get some." With her most intimate moment coming with the heartbreaking "Sadness Is A Blessing" Li struggles with a failed relationship. Love, lust, and regret play very prominent roles throughout Rhymes, that Li delivers with the strength of someone who has been down this road a few times. With Bjorn Yttling (Peter, Bjorn, & John) again on board with production, Rhymes delivers the innocence of love through a very direct and gripping album.

A Lull Cover Bruce Springsteen

Chicago's A Lull have released a cover of Bruce Springsteen's "I'm On Fire" off his iconic 1984 album Born In The USA. The band takes the slow burner and turns it into a slower moving space tribal freak out. Grab it below.

Best of 2011 - The Cave Singers: No Witch

Over the next two weeks we will be posting our favorite albums released over the last 12 months. These are in no particular order, just a list of the albums we feel should garner your attention if they haven't already.

The first album that we absolutely had to include on the list is No Witch, from Seattle trio The Cave Singers. Released in February on Jagjaguwar, No Witch finds the band continue their mix Marty Lund's rolling drums, the always present but never smothering guitar of Derek Fudesco, and the distinctive vocal delivery of Pete Quirk. Balancing between back-of-the-porch blues on "Haystacks" to Arabic freak outs (see 'Outer Realms') No Witch looks to take the listener into the mystic forest, staring off into a valley of the unknown. By the time you get to the bar-room rocker "Cleaver Creatures" you'll be pissed that you're already through 3/4 of the record. Produced by Randall Dunn, the album is a lushly flowing piece of work that warrants repetitive listens.

Wilco Record Daytrotter Sessions

Coldplay Playing The United Center

Almost a year to the day from their massive arena size set at Lollaplaooza last summer, Coldplay will return to Chicago for a show in an actual arena. The band has confirmed a North American tour that will take them from Canada through major markets around the US in the summer of next year. The British pop band will touch down in Chicago August 7th at the Untied Center. With open dates on both sides of the 7th don't be surprised if the band adds an additional date or two at the UC, and possibly a date at Alpine Music Theatre up in Wisconsin.

Yukon Blonde is Vancouver based quartet that play road trippin' rock and roll in the spirit of fellow Canadians Neil Young and The Band, but with a more modern pop feel. Building a following the old fashioned way, hitting the road, picking up one fan at a time, one show at a time, the four road tested Canucks are gearing up for their biggest year yet. 2012 will see the band release their yet untitled sophomore LP, as well playing shows just about everyday from now until the end of April. They have a date announced here in Chicago for March 27th, but the venue has yet to be set. The band's 2011 Fire//Water EP is up for streaming on their website and its first single 'Fire' can be downloaded below.

Rodrigo y Gabriela Relase Single

Spanish guitar duo Rodrigo y Gabriela have released 'Juan Loco' the first single off their forthcoming album Area 52. Their third album released on the ATO label, Area 52 sees the group expand on their metal infused jazz guitar sound, recording with the 13 piece Cuban orchestra, collectively known as C.U.B.A. This is the first collaborated recording Rodrigo y Gabriela has worked on with another musical group. Karl Denson's Tiny Universe has announced a handful of tour dates in February that will see the funk outfit play The Rolling Stones iconic 1971 album Sticky Fingers in it's entirety. The band will be joined by New Orleans' guitarist Anders Osbourne who will provide opening duties as well as join KDTU on stage. Denson and Co. will bring their Sticky Fingers Tour to Chicago February 18th, for a show at Park West. The Chicago date is the last on the tour so the band should be in top shape when they take aim at Mick, Keith, Charlie, Mick, and Bill.

Gigantic Underground Conspiracy Making Debut

As previously reported, both The Disco Biscuits as well as Big Gigantic will headline their own respective end of the year blowouts here in Chicago on December 31st. Both bands come from the same electronic school, using live instrumentation to create sonic landscapes of sensory overdrive, so it only makes sense that while in Chicago, members of both bands would convene for some sort of collaboration. On Sunday January 1st, both bands will do just that for a show at theBottom Lounge. Being billed as Gigantic Underground Conspiracy, Aaron Magner and Marc Brownstein of The Disco Biscuits will be joined by the Big Gigantic duo of Dominic Lalli and Jeremy Salken for a one off show that will surely pull from the electronic heavy influences of both bands. GUC will be rounded out by Magner/Brownstein collaborator Chris Mechitti and Ben Baruch of the Underground Orchestra. Tickets for the show are on sale now.

After two successful Sold Out shows last month at Lincoln Hall, France's M83. will return to the states next spring for a full on US Tour. They'll be in Chicago for a show at The Vic, May 4th. Cass McCombs Playing Lincoln Hall

Big day for Cass McCombs on the site. First we posted our review of Humor Risk earlier today, and just in, Cass has announced that he will be playing Lincoln Hall Sunday, January 29th. Cass will be touring much of the United States in support of 'Risk' and his other 2011 release WIT'S END. Frank Fairfiled will join Cass on much of the tour.

And that's not all from Cass, below you can check out a video of him performing his latest politically charged single "Bradley Manning" live from the Democracy Now! studios. The single will be released as a 7'' on January 31st.

Cass McCombs - Humor Risk

In Humor Risk, Cass McCombs follows up his critically acclaimed Wit’s End with another dose of heavy lyricism and sparse musicality. Based on the album’s title one would expect a mixture of lighthearted observations and bold musical endeavors. Instead McCombs has crafted a record that revolves around deep, often dark, lyrics that contemplate the mystery of art and the problems in society, often referring to Biblical themes and long dead philosophers, while the slow moving music sets a tone that moves from dissonant and off-putting to almost catchy.

The opening track, “Love Thine Enemy,” brings the famous Christian dictum of the title to the present and lays the foundation for the rest of the record with reverb drenched bass and guitars laying down a slow, driving beat that McCombs’ vocals tread like a weary traveler. The instruments are reminiscent of a very toned down garage rock anthem but include a dissonant element that puts the focus squarely on the lyrics. The lyrics are where McCombs wants his listeners to concentrate. The music is both intriguing and thought provoking in its minimalism, but always reflects back to the words. The composition is sparse enough to be easily mistaken for simple but there is always a tone or note included that makes it anything but. The musical sparseness lays a foundation for the lyrics which, although sung in a low, quiet voice, demand the full attention of the listener.

McCombs rejects the usual singer/songwriter guy-who-sings-songs-about-girls-who-broke/mended-his-heart stereotype in favor of a man who is not afraid to reach into his inner darkness to tell stories that broach topics that have confounded thinkers for centuries. “The Living Word” is a slow dance that sounds like it should be about some high school crush, but is instead a philosophic meditation based on the beginning of John’s Gospel, while also drawing on the eastern philosophy of Lao Tzu and Confucius, about the essence of art and the written word. It is a heavy topic for a six minute song, but one that exemplifies McCombs’ intriguing songwriting style.

Although most of the album is on the darker side of dark, there are moments where the humor of the album’s title shines through. In “To Every Man His Chimera,” an incredibly slow moving behemoth of a ballad about the nature of despair, McCombs pokes fun at his current home state of California, and certain lines in “Robin’s Egg Blue” sound like they could come from a nursery rhyme. It is the combination of these little tongue-in-cheek moments with the sparse, sometimes dissonant composition and the ambitiously complex themes housed in the lyrics that give the record its great worth.

In Humor Risk, McCombs rises far beyond the scope of most musicians. It is clear that he does take certain risks with this album, but it is certain that the last laugh will not lie with his doubters, if there are any. - J. Thornton

Andrew Bird Playing Auditorium Theatre

Andrew Bird will celebrate the release of his new album Break It Yourself with a North American tour set to kick off in mid-March, including a Chicago date on Saturday, May 12 at the Auditorium Theatre. All concert tickets will be bundled with a unique musical package including a redemption code to download Break It Yourself upon release date (March 6). Ticket buyers will also receive a download of Fake Conversations, a live EP culled from Bird’s fall 2011 tour, and a second souvenir live EP from the Spring 2012 tour.

Interpretations - Wu Lyf @ The Empty Bottle

A couple of weeks ago Wu Lyf played The Empty Bottle for a show of aggressive punk and debauchery along with a few untimely and precarious set breaks. Our man Jack Thornton braved the raucous crowd to capture the nights performance. Manchester kings of volatility Wu Lyf (World Unite Lucifer Youth Foundation) brought their gruff art punk to the Empty Bottle on November 14th. Playing to a raucous crowd, the quartet played with the in your face gusto that permeates their recorded tracks. Wu Lyf is notorious for disregarding the usual methods of pop star life (the group never gives interviews and refused to sign with a record label instead choosing to put their record out themselves) and showed it during their set. They played with energy but were almost completely without any real crowd interaction or connection. They even stopped their set not once but twice so that band members could go use the venue’s facilities. When you gotta go you gotta go, but these breaks had the unfortunate effect of killing the band’s momentum and creating the sort of awkward silences that are unusual and uncomfortable at rock shows.

In spite of the disinterest of the band, it was still a good show. Regardless of the attitude of the musicians onstage, the music stands on its own and provided the enthusiastic crowd with a good time. The songs were energetic and well-composed with the barking rasp of keyboardist and vocalist “Elle Jaie” Roberts, sounding like Tom Waits with a hacking cough and a bad hangover , careening over the beats and layers laid down by percussionist “Jeau” Manning and bassist “Lung” McLung (who demonstrated his hard core spirit by losing his shirt 5 minutes into the set). Garage rock seems to be making a comeback and it’s bands like Wu Lyf with their unique, intriguing live shows that are leading the way.

Wu Lyf has been taking the indie world by storm in a manner similar to that of rap group Odd Future. Hopefully they can build on what they have done so far and can continue to provide energetic live shows in the future. All I ask is that next time they use the bathroom before they go onstage. - J. The Black Keys Announce United Center Show

The Black Keys announced today that they will embark on the first leg of their US tour this coming March. As previously reported the band is gearing up to release their 7th LP "El Camino" next Tuesday. This tour will be the bands biggest to date, playing arenas and stadiums from Madison Square Garden in New York to the United Center right here is Chicago on March 19th. The band will be joined by British rockers Arctic Monkeys for the UC date. Tickets for the United Center will go on sale just in time for that last minute holiday gift, December 17th.

Heartless Bastards Release Single/Playing Lincoln hall
